What Is a Dental Crown or Bridge?
Dental crowns and bridges are dental prosthetics designed to cover and reinforce gaps or broken sections of teeth. They can help address problems caused by tooth decay or from an unexpected accident that exposed the sensitive interior of your tooth.
Usually made of porcelain or resin compounds, a dental crown helps not only to deal with dental pain, but also to improve your oral health. Crowns and supported bridges cover the exposed parts of your teeth and gums and create a new surface for the damage tooth, thereby holding the entire structure together like a fixed cap.
A supported bridge attaches to adjacent teeth in the back and consists of an implement that covers or takes the place of a damaged tooth. Bridges can, as a result, help teeth remain steady so they do not loosen from decay or impact.
A common concern for prospective patients involves the appearance of a dental crown or bridge. Rest assured, we manufacture our crowns and bridges to mimic the look of a natural tooth so no one can tell the difference.
What to Expect
During your first appointment, our experienced dental team will clean and exam your teeth and determine what restorative dental treatment will be the most effective.
If you opt to have a crown or bridge procedure, our dentist, Dr. Jennifer Waterman, may prepare your tooth for the prosthetic and take an imprint. Depending on the situation, she may also place a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the permeant prosthetic is created.
Once your crown or bridge is ready, the temporary crown will be removed if applicable, and we’ll test the fit of your permanent prosthetic. If every looks good and feels comfortable, we’ll place it—and that’s it. You may experience some minor swelling and discomfort if any drilling or shaping was required to place the crown or bridge, but this should be manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
